The saints I learned about growing up all seemed really serious….there weren't a lot of smiles or laughter in the pictures depicting them. Thus, I used to think one had to be really SERIOUS, UNSMILING. I'll grant you that most of them were martyrs, and I don't think there's much to smile about if you know you are going to be martyred…..right??? But I don't think you necessarily have to be martyred to be classified as "saintly".
Perhaps in these days upcoming we can think about loved ones….about special people we have been touched by…..people who seem to exude peace and love. Try to think of the qualities in them that represent that specialness….AND, better yet, tell them if they're still here!!!
Perhaps we can also look within ourselves and do a check list of the qualities we would need to possess to be more like them.
